Josephine Kiggundu is an Associate and a qualified Advocate in TASLAF Advocates. She is the lead Associate in charge of litigation, arbitration and dispute resolution at the firm. She possesses valuable experience, practical skill and knowledge in various multi-dimensional aspects of dispute resolution, whether arising in banking and finance, energy, oil and gas, tax, employment, land and family matters.  

A high performer, Josephine is able to work under pressure and ably lead the dispute resolution team, in resolving complex litigation matters. She previously worked with leading law firms in Uganda where she gained leadership and proactive skills in leading teams to find and ably execute legal solutions to various legal problems, be it in commercial, civil or criminal law.  

Josephine also advises on corporate and commercial transactions including, intellectual property rights, corporate regulatory filings and registrations, banking and finance, land and real estate.


Litigation and Transactional Experience

Litigation and Dispute Resolution

  • Assisted lead counsel in advising and representing Great Lakes Coffee Limited in a banking and finance suit against Eco Bank (U) Ltd that was amicably settled and concluded.
  • Representing the aggrieved members of the Mengo Kisenyi Market Vendors Association against the illegal and fraudulent sale of the Mengo Kisenyi Market land to some investors and Ugandan business men.
  • Advised a client on the recovery of land arising out of a land dispute arising out of several land transactions with the King (Kabaka) of Buganda, the Nkuluuze and the Buganda Land Board
  • Assisted lead counsel in representing a client in a suit for the recovery of over USD 100,000 against KCB Bank.
  • Represented Yunus Social Business Foundation Uganda Limited (YSB) in a suit for the recovery of over USD 100,000 against its debtors
  • Representing a client in a suit against the Uganda Revenue Authority for illegal VAT tax refunds to companies that do not deal in goods that are zero rated under the VAT Act.  
  • Represented the Cross-Cultural Foundation of Uganda against tax dues that were assessed in error by the Uganda Revenue Authority.
  • Defended a client against charges of theft, money laundering and on the count of conspiracy to commit a felony in a criminal complaint from Equity Bank Uganda Limited.
  • Defended a client against charges of theft, forgery and uttering false documents arising from a complaint by Simba Telecom Uganda Limited.
  • Represented Catering International & Services Uganda Limited in an application for the stay of the voluntary winding up proceedings against the company in Uganda.
  • Represented and defended Intercon Freight Logistics Limited in the recovery of over USD 300, 000 against its debtors.
  • Assisted in the recovery of money from several debtors on behalf of PLC, Nabajjuzi Coffee Factory, Mwiri Secondary School and REM Distributors Limited.
  • Successfully defended Hotel International, Muyenga against a negligence suit by an individual.
  • Advised and represented Union Logistics in the recovery of containers held at the police station due to the negligence of their client.
  • Represented several clients like Orion Transformers & Electrics Ltd, War Child Canada and Uganda National Cultural Center in employment disputes against their former employees.
  • Represented Media Legal Defence Initiative in an application to intervene as amicus curiae in a Human Rights violation case against the Attorney General of Uganda and several other telecommunications.
  • Represented a single father in a divorce and custody battle where custody of the infant female child was granted to the father.
  • Represented several clients in divorce and nullity of marriages petitions arising from civil marriages and marriages under the Marriage and Divorce of Mohammedan Act of Uganda.
  • Assisted the legal team acting for Veksons Uganda in a claim against Bank of Uganda and Crane Bank Uganda in Liquidation.   
  • Defended Media Focus on Africa (MFA) in an intellectual property claim on the ownership of the Yat Madit Television series production and directorship rights.
  • Representing former employees of Golden Marketing Limited, Reime (Uganda) Limited and URSB in employment disputes arising from unlawful and unfair termination by the Employer.

Corporate and Commercial Transactions

  • Assisted the advisory team for FOL Logistics Limited in carrying out a due diligence before the purchase of 10,000 acres of land for a large scale rice project in Kween District.
  • Reviewed all contracts, advised and assisted in the updating of the human resource documents such as employment contracts, human resource manuals, volunteer contracts, probation contracts, casual/temporary staff contracts and consultancy contracts for War Child Canada, UZURI Health & Beauty Limited, Goldmine Finance Limited and Orion Transformers & Electrics Ltd.
  • Advised UZURI Health & Beauty Limited on securing a loan under Convertible promissory notes.
  • Assisted in perfecting several mortgages on behalf of Yunus Social business Foundation Uganda and the social businesses they serve.
  • Represented Vexsons (U) Limited in perfecting and closing a credit facility with DFCU Bank which had recently taken over Crane Bank (U) Ltd.
  • Assisted in advising Hello Foods on the registration of a trademark and protection of its intellectual property rights against Hella Food who had a similar and misleading name and branding colour.
  • Advised WINSenga Limited on the registration of patents, trademarks, industrial designs, copyrights and others rights both with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau and ARIPO.
  • Registered several trademarks with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau on behalf of Blush Media, Jade E Services Limited, Capstone Investments Limited, Goldmine Finance Limited and Hello Foods.
  • Advised Trisha Construction Company Limited in a purchase of land and prepared the relevant documents for the completion of sale and transfer of title.
